Dr. Teh Yik Koon MD Associate Professor University Utara Malaysia ykteh11@yahoo.com "My research on 507 trans in 2001 shows trans start feeling different at a very young age. Concerning religion, I have spoken to an ustaz at Jakim (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam) and he said that if trans is a biological factor, then Islam will have to reinterpret the matter. In Iran, the government has accepted the existence of trans and pays for the operation." . Dr Teh Yik Koon (Koon, TY. 25 January 2006 Trans is a biological phenomenon. Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd)

The Malaysian term for FTM is Pak nyah (pak=father), also called abang (brother man) and tomboy. There are four genders in Islam: male, female, khunsa (intergender) and mukhannis/mukhannas (gender variant). Islam is intolerant towards mukhannis/mukhannas. In Malaysia gender variance is illegal. The Hadith in Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book72, Number 774, states that: Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet cursed effeminate men and those women who assume the manners of men, and he said, "Turn them out of your houses." The Hadith in Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 32, Number 4087, states that: Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Apostle of Allah cursed the man who dressed like a woman and the woman who dressed like a man. Trans who want to add a new name of the opposite gender to their original name must prove SRS via a letter from a doctor in a government hospital. Letters from private hospitals or clinics are not acceptable so the government restricts access.
